Internet2 sets new speed record

Researchers at the Internet2 Consortium’s spring meeting last week announced a new speed record for the high speed network. An international team led by the University of Tokyo revealed that on New Years Eve last year they successfully transmitted data on the internet2 network at a staggering 9.08 Gbps. The transmission covered a 32000 km path and used IPv6, three routers and a dual Xenon server. The new record is close to the theoretical maximum speed for the current internet2 network of 10 Gbps, however the Consortium are currently working on an even faster network with a capacity of 100Gbps. This new network will be fast enough to transmit a high definition movie in a few seconds, compared to a few hours at current standard broadband speeds. The Internet2 Consortium is comprised of over 200 Universities.
