Microsoft launches HD Photo
Microsoft formally launched HD photo, a new file format for digital photography this week. HD Photo is a far more efficient codec than the current defacto standard JPEG which has been with us since 1992. HD Photo is capable of file sizes half that of JPEG and also offers a choice between both lossless and lossy compression. MS have released a plug-in for Photoshop and include native support for HD Photo in Vista, nevertheless it will be interesting to see how quickly HD Photo is adopted as I believe that there may be some reluctance to switch to a format that MS own all the patents to. At this stage there are no cameras that shoot and save directly in the HD Photo format but no doubt it’s just a matter of time.
