US military unveils its new Heat-Ray

The US Defence Department has unveiled a new heat beaming weapon that can be used to control mobs or repel enemies.
The weapon which is called the Active Denial System creates an intense burning sensation, causing people to run for cover but leaves no permanent damage. The system can be mounted on a Humvee and uses a large dish antenna to direct the beam towards a target, it includes a high voltage power unit and is effective at more than 500m. Current non-lethal weapons such as rubber bullets are only effective at much smaller distances.
The beam can penetrate clothes and heats the skin to 50C causing a burning sensation similar to a blast from a very hot oven. The pain is unbearable without ducking for cover and ceases as soon exposure to the beam ends.
The military hope the system will be in operation by 2010.
