Hubble main camera shut down

This is bad news, the main camera on the Hubble Space Telescope has shut down after its backup power supply failed and probably will never be fully working again. The camera, called the Advanced Camera for Surveys, is the most used instrument on the Hubble Telescope and the best scenario scientists are now hoping for is to return it to one third capacity by mid-February.

“So, clearly the observations will continue, science will continue, but it’s a great loss, no doubt. It’s a great loss because this was a fantastic camera that just produced incredible science”
