Solar cells triple in efficiency

A new solar cell that can convert more than 40% of incident sunlight into electricity has been announced by the US Department of Energy (DOE). The cell which is manufactured by Boeing-Spectrolab, uses a combination of mirrors and prisms to increase the amount of light falling on the photoreceptor. Regular solar cells are approximately 15% efficient while these new cells which the inventors are calling “concentrator cells” are at least 3 times more efficient approaching efficiency rates of 45%.
